Thomas Tuchel has revealed Manchester City’s legal case has become a regular subject of conversation inside the England camp, with players discussing it over breakfast and dinner.
The England manager acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding City could be affecting the club’s internationals as his squad prepare for their Nations League meeting with Croatia.
Elliot Anderson and Marc Guehi remain with England, while Nico O’Reilly was originally selected before withdrawing through injury.
Tuchel reveals City conversations
Speaking ahead of the Croatia game, Tuchel was asked directly whether City’s situation had become a distraction for his players.
“I think it is a distraction. It is. Let’s say it is a subject. If it’s a distraction, I don’t know,” he said, according to The Guardian.
Tuchel then explained just how regularly the subject is being discussed away from training.
“It is of course a topic and we speak about it at dinner and at a table of eight or 12 people. We speak about it at breakfast.”
The German was reluctant to suggest the situation could simply be ignored because England are on international duty.
“If I say now it’s not then I can just speak for myself, which would be totally narrow-minded.”
Tuchel also revealed City’s players are receiving considerable outside attention following the independent commission’s findings.
“I know the Man City players get a lot of messages and phone calls and feedback about it,” he said.
Asked whether they could be concerned about their futures, Tuchel described that as a potentially “very human reaction” given the uncertainty surrounding the club.
The England manager added that City’s players are young and ambitious and had signed for the club without expecting to find themselves in the present situation.
City appeal now under way
The comments provide an unusual insight into how the case is being discussed among players outside the Etihad. An independent commission found City guilty of serious breaches of Premier League financial rules covering nine seasons between 2009/10 and 2017/18, as well as the majority of charges relating to failures to co-operate with the League’s investigation.
City deny wrongdoing and are challenging those findings. The Premier League confirmed on Friday that City have lodged an appeal with the Chair of the Judicial Panel. The independent Appeal Board hearing will remain private and confidential until publication of its outcome is permitted.
We previously detailed the commission’s findings in our report on the verdict and have followed the legal process throughout, including the long wait for the original decision.
Tuchel, meanwhile, indicated the uncertainty surrounding City would not prevent him from continuing to select their players. That may offer some reassurance to Anderson, Guehi and O’Reilly. More revealing is Tuchel’s acknowledgement that once the players leave the training pitch and sit down together for a meal, City’s situation is proving impossible to ignore.
