Floyd Samba represents third country weeks after Man City breakthrough

City youngster Floyd Samba’s remarkable few weeks have continued after the 17-year-old represented Germany at Under-19 level for the first time.

Samba, who has previously played youth international football for England and France, was selected by Germany for a six-nation tournament in Spain shortly after making an extraordinary first-team breakthrough at Man City.

The midfielder made his Germany U19 debut against Ukraine on 27 September, starting and playing 53 minutes of a goalless draw. He later started again as Germany completed the tournament unbeaten with a 1-1 draw against Czechia.

Floyd Samba’s remarkable rise continues

The international development came just days after Samba announced himself to City’s senior supporters in emphatic fashion.

He scored twice on his first-team debut as Enzo Maresca’s side beat Norwich City 5-0 in the EFL Cup on 17 September, opening the scoring with a first-half header before adding his second after the break.

Samba’s subsequent involvement with Germany adds another intriguing element to the story of a player who has already represented England and France during his youth international career.

Representing different countries at youth level doesn’t necessarily determine which nation a player will eventually represent at senior level, leaving Samba’s long-term international future open.

For now, that decision can wait.

At 17, Samba has gone from scoring twice on his Manchester City debut to representing a third country at youth level within a matter of weeks. Amid all the noise surrounding City away from the pitch, his progress offers a welcome change of subject and another reason to watch the club’s academy closely.
