FA considers action after Man City verdict as governing body issues statement

The Football Association has confirmed it is considering the implications of the verdict against City and says it will “take action where appropriate”.

City were found guilty of 114 of the 115 charges brought against them following the Premier League’s long-running financial investigation. The club has since appealed and continues to maintain its innocence.

The FA has now publicly responded to the independent commission’s decision, raising the possibility of a separate response from English football’s governing body once the ongoing proceedings have developed further.

FA responds to Man City verdict

“The Independent Commission’s decision has significant implications for the integrity of the game,” the FA said in its official statement. “We are carefully considering the decision and its implications and will take action where appropriate.”

The governing body added that proceedings between the Premier League and City remain ongoing, meaning it doesn’t intend to comment further at this stage. It will, however, continue to monitor developments.

The wording is significant, but it shouldn’t be interpreted as confirmation that further sanctions are coming. The FA hasn’t announced a separate charge, investigation or punishment against City, and hasn’t explained what action, if any, it might eventually take.

The Premier League process itself also remains unfinished, with the question of sanctions still to be resolved. City have also confirmed that they lodged their appeal against the commission’s opinion at 7pm on Thursday.

City maintain that the opinion contains “clear material errors, of law, principle and fact” and is “unsafe”. The club also continues to insist it is innocent of the accusations made by the Premier League.

The FA’s intervention therefore adds another potential strand to a case that remains some way from completion. City’s appeal and the Premier League’s disciplinary process remain the immediate issues, while the FA has now made clear that it is considering what the commission’s findings could mean for its own responsibilities.
