It has been another busy Monday for City, with Erling Haaland’s fitness dominating the early part of the day before attention returned to the continuing fallout from the Premier League verdict.
There was also plenty happening on international duty, while Floyd Samba’s rapid rise provided a welcome football story amid another day when events away from the pitch were difficult to escape. Here’s our 7pm round-up of the main City news and talking points from 5 October.
Haaland concern gives way to relief
The day began with concern after Haaland appeared to limp off as Norway lost 2-1 to Portugal on Sunday evening.
The striker asked to be substituted after 67 minutes, an uncomfortable sight with City travelling to Liverpool on Sunday and facing Paris Saint-Germain three days later.
Norway manager Stale Solbakken subsequently provided a much more reassuring explanation, saying Haaland had been tired and that his withdrawal after around an hour had effectively been planned. Our Haaland fitness update has the full details, although there has yet to be a formal medical update from City.
The international break has nevertheless underlined his remarkable importance to club and country. Haaland now has 65 goals in only 59 senior appearances for Norway, including three during the current window.
FA considers implications of City verdict
Away from the pitch, the repercussions from last week’s verdict continue.
The Football Association has confirmed it is considering the implications of the independent commission’s decision, saying it will “take action where appropriate”.
That should not be interpreted as confirmation of another charge or punishment. The FA hasn’t announced either, while City have appealed after being found guilty of 114 of the 115 Premier League charges brought against them.
The wider political consequences are also becoming increasingly apparent. UK government sources have reportedly acknowledged anxiety within Whitehall over what happens next, given the scale of Britain’s economic relationship with the United Arab Emirates.
Former Manchester City Council leader Sir Richard Leese offered another perspective, defending Abu Dhabi’s investment in Manchester and arguing that the relationship has delivered significant benefits to the city.
Those arguments have no bearing on City’s appeal or the independent disciplinary process, but they illustrate how far the consequences of the case now extend beyond football.
International break reaches its final stages
City’s sizeable international contingent is gradually beginning to return to Manchester.
Our Man City international duty tracker has been updated with the latest appearances, minutes, goals and remaining fixtures, including Iliman Ndiaye’s winner for Senegal and the latest involvement of Haaland, Rúben Dias, Marc Guéhi and Elliot Anderson.
There is still City interest on Monday evening, with Rayan Cherki and Gianluigi Donnarumma both in Nations League action. France host Belgium while Italy face Turkey, with both matches kicking off at 7.45pm BST.
Several more City players have fixtures on Tuesday before Enzo Maresca can begin putting his squad back together ahead of the trip to Anfield.
Samba’s rise provides welcome change of subject
Amid the legal, political and financial discussion, Floyd Samba’s progress has provided a rather different City story.
The 17-year-old has now represented Germany at Under-19 level after previously playing youth international football for England and France, another development in what has been an extraordinary few weeks for the midfielder.
Samba’s international switch follows his remarkable senior breakthrough, when he scored twice on his City debut in the 5-0 Carabao Cup win over Norwich.
The bigger picture around City remains impossible to ignore, and Monday has brought further evidence of that. But with the international break almost complete and Liverpool waiting on Sunday, the focus will gradually begin shifting back towards what happens on the pitch.
For Maresca, getting Haaland and the rest of his international players back fit and available will be the immediate priority.
