Maresca gives Man City players two weeks off during international break

City players not involved with their national teams have been given two weeks off by Enzo Maresca during the international break.

There will be no group training at the City Football Academy during that period, with the players staying behind, trusted to balance their time off with maintaining their fitness before City’s return to Premier League action.

Enzo Maresca sets out plan for players staying at Man City

According to the Manchester Evening News, Phil Foden, Matheus Nunes and Allan are among those remaining in Manchester while the majority of Maresca’s squad are away with their countries.

Jeremy Doku has also been left out of Belgium’s plans following his recent injury. The winger could spend some of next week at the CFA continuing his recovery and rehabilitation rather than having the entire period away.

The arrangement follows the approach City used during Pep Guardiola’s time at the club. Those without international commitments are free to spend the next fortnight as they wish, provided they return ready for training ahead of the trip to Liverpool.

Maresca will be staying in Manchester himself. He joked after the 5-3 victory over Sunderland that his children being at school had put paid to any plans to go away, while the three-week gap gives him time to review City’s opening matches.

He does so with his side having won seven successive games in all competitions, a run we looked at in our recent analysis of City’s winning streak.

Players staying in Manchester will begin working with Maresca again during the week before Liverpool. Those returning from international duty will report back according to their schedules, with the full squad expected to be together by Thursday before the trip to Anfield on Sunday, 11 October.
