20 goals in seven wins show Man City attack hitting stride under Enzo Maresca

City have reached the international break with 20 goals scored during Enzo Maresca’s perfect start to competitive life at the Etihad.

City have won all seven matches since their Community Shield defeat against Arsenal, scoring 13 times in their opening five Premier League games and another seven in the Carabao Cup. Half of those 20 goals have arrived in the last two matches.

Man City score 10 goals in two games

City beat Norwich City 5-0 in the Carabao Cup before Sunday’s extraordinary 5-3 Premier League win over Sunderland.

The goals against Sunderland were shared around. Enzo Fernandez opened the scoring before Rayan Cherki restored City’s lead and Antoine Semenyo struck twice. Erling Haaland eventually added the fifth, taking his own tally to seven goals in seven appearances in all competitions.

Semenyo has made a quick start following his summer move from Bournemouth, while Fernandez and Cherki have also contributed goals since arriving at City.

There was plenty at the other end for Maresca to work on, however. Sunderland scored three times and Brian Brobbey completed a hat-trick, with the City manager unhappy about the manner of two of the goals conceded.

“To be honest, I prefer to win 1-0 than 5-3,” Maresca said afterwards. “I’m always concerned, always trying to see what we can do better. Two of the goals were too easy.”

City now have three weeks before their next game, away to Liverpool on October 11. Maresca will have things to address when his international players return. Scoring goals is not currently high on the list.
