Man City set Rodri stance amid Real Madrid interest

  • Man City make transfer decision
  • Comes after controversial comments

Manchester City have come to a decision on what to do with Rodri, who has been linked with Real Madrid.

Rodri’s contract expires next summer, so there was always going to be speculation regarding his future at Man City.

Indeed, the Spain international has not exactly reassured his current club. Recently, he refused to rule out a move, and will not be clarifying where he stands until after the World Cup.

So while it is possible that he could sign a new contract, there is also a chance he will look to depart for La Liga this summer.

Man City have no plans to sell Rodri

While Rodri’s own stance remains unclear, Simon Bajkowski has revealed that Man City are looking to keep him.

The 29-year-old is still under contract, and is being counted on to still be around next season after the World Cup.

This comes as Real Madrid presidential candidate Enrique Riquelme has revealed that he will sign Rodri if elected.

He has also promised to sign Erling Haaland, making claims which have already been shut down by Man City and the striker’s agent.

Rodri could leave Man City on a free transfer next summer

There is a common assumption that if a player has a year remaining on their contract, they will be sold. Unless of course, they are willing to put pen to paper on a new deal.

However, Man City were willing to let both John Stones and Bernardo Silva leave upon the expiration of their contracts this summer.

Rodri could be afforded the same kind of exit. He may not have been at the club as long, but he did become the first Citizen to win the Ballon d’Or.

Therefore, City could be generous enough to allow him one more season at the Etihad Stadium, before becoming a free agent next year.

Any chance of receiving a transfer fee would be gone, but it would mean having the midfielder for Enzo Maresca’s first campaign in charge.

City’s preference will be for a new contract

Better still, Rodri could agree to a new deal which would see him remain at the club for a few more years.

This will be Man City’s preference, as he is still a regular starter. In fact, Rodri made 33 appearances this season, and it would have been more if he had not experienced injury struggles.

However, it is up to the player himself whether he decides to extend his stay in Manchester. If not, then City have a big decision to make.

matchday.
