Man City will not attempt to sign Pedro Porro – but right-back search continues

  • Man City want to sign a right-back
  • Pedro Porro is linked with a move
  • The club’s strategy does not align

Manchester City have been interested in signing Pedro Porro, but he does not match their ideal right-back profile.

Matheus Nunes has had a busy season, having taken up the right-back position in Pep Guardiola’s team.

The Portugal international started 15 consecutive Premier League matches, and was only benched for the final game of the season as Man City had nothing to play for.

Clearly there is a shortage of players in the position, so this is something the club are looking to resolve this summer.

Man City want to sign a young right-back

According to BBC Sport journalist Shamoon Hafez, Man City are looking to sign a right-back to supplement Nunes, rather than competing with him.

The priority is to bring in someone who is both young and naturally suited to the position. Then eventually, they will be integrated into the first-team.

This means Pedro Porro is unlikely to be signed, a player who has been linked with Man City over the past couple of weeks.

After all, the Tottenham Hotspur defender turns 27 in September, and would be expected to rival Nunes for a spot in the starting lineup.

No plans for Rico Lewis

While capable of playing as a defensive midfielder, Rico Lewis primarily operates as a right-sided full-back.

Nevertheless, his performances this season were few and far between. In fact, he only made 22 appearances for Man City in all competitions.

Despite being a young option who has plenty of room for development, it seems his future with the Citizens could be short-lived.

What other positions do Man City need to strengthen?

Adding a midfielder is just as important as signing a new right-back. Bernardo Silva has left Man City, and Elliot Anderson has become the club’s main transfer target.

Nottingham Forest have rejected City’s opening bid, but there is plenty of time for a deal to be struck between the two clubs.

Additionally, a new winger would be a useful addition to Man City’s squad, especially if Savinho joins Tottenham.

matchday.
