Rodri refuses to rule out Man City exit ahead of World Cup
  • Rodri has been linked with Real Madrid
  • Midfielder insists he is only focused on Spain
  • Already knows his intentions for new season

Rodri has provided an update on his Manchester City future, but he is not giving too much away at this point in time.

Bernardo Silva and John Stones were given the send-off they deserved last month, but Rodri might not be afforded a similar goodbye.

This is because he is refusing to clarify which club he will represent next season. So if he does leave, it could well be before the new campaign has started.

However, there is still hope that Rodri will remain at Man City and sign a new contract, with his current deal due to expire next year.

Rodri will not announce his decision until after the World Cup

According to BBC Sport, Rodri will be a transfer target if Enrique Riquelme gets elected as Real Madrid’s president.

Despite this, the Spaniard has chosen not to dwell on this possible opportunity. Instead, he is solely focused on the World Cup.

During a news conference, Rodri said: “With a World Cup ahead, my responsibility is to stay focused.

“Anything related to my future will wait until after the World Cup.

“When a player is approaching the final stage of his contract, it’s normal for names to be mentioned,” he continued.

“I’m very calm, I know exactly where I stand, and I’ll tell you that perhaps if there hadn’t been a World Cup, things might be different now.”

Is Rodri leaving Man City?

Rodri’s final comment is interesting, because clearly the fact there is a World Cup is preventing him from revealing his next move.

But why would this be the case if he was going to sign a new contract? That could have been announced before the end of the season.

It could be that Rodri is planning to move away from the Citizens, and that he did not want to break the news while the 2025/26 campaign was still ongoing.

Then again, all we can do at this point is speculate. Ultimately, Rodri has not said whether he is staying or leaving, and no report has given a clear-cut answer.

Man City could attempt two big midfield signings

Should Rodri decide to leave Man City after six years, signing more than one midfielder will be viewed as essential.

City have already lost Silva, and he is likely to be replaced by Elliot Anderson. Still, another signing could be required.

Man City have been linked with Sandro Tonali, while Enzo Fernandez’s name has been thrown around over the past week.

However, Enzo Maresca will need to assess his new squad, and perhaps he will see something in Tijjani Reijnders or Nico Gonzalez which Pep Guardiola missed.

With Mateo Kovacic at the Italian’s disposal too, the Sky Blues should not have many problems when it comes to quantity.

It is simply about whether or not the midfielders in their squad are good enough to be starting on a weekly basis.
