- Man City have lost two players on free transfers
- Five Man City players could do the same next year
- Two are in talks regarding a new contract with the club
Manchester City have seen Bernardo Silva and John Stones leave the club as free agents, and five more players could do the same next summer.
After 10 and nine-year spells respectively, both Stones and Silva decided to end their time at Man City.
And with five more players on short contracts, there could be some more departures at the end of next season where there is no transfer fee involved.
Let’s take a look at those members of the squad whose current deals are set to expire in the near future.
Phil Foden
Near the beginning of the month, Foden agreed a new long-term deal with Man City. At least, that is what was reported.
In fact, it was even claimed that the midfielder was receiving a pay rise, despite his limited role in the latter half of the season.
However, there has been no official confirmation from the club as of yet, which means Foden’s future with City is not fully secure.
Rodri
Man City want to renew Rodri’s contract and have been putting in the work to keep him at the Etihad Stadium.
Despite this, there have been murmurings about a Real Madrid move, with the midfielder obviously originating from the Spanish capital.
It is up to the 29-year-old as to whether he signs a new deal. If not, it is highly likely that the Citizens will look to sell him this summer.
Nathan Ake
While Ake has served Man City well over the years, it is hard to see any scenario where he is offered a new contract.
The defender only started six Premier League matches this season, and City have options in both the centre-back and left-back positions.
Ake has been linked with a move to Serie A and it does seem likely that he will be sold during the summer transfer window.
Mateo Kovacic
Being 32 years old, it is difficult to see how Kovacic could have a long-term future at Man City, given his role in the team.
In fairness, the Croat spent most of the season sidelined through injury, but he is not going to be a regular starter during the next campaign.
City might let Kovacic see out the remainder of his contract. In fact, he might even be offered a one-year extension. But anything more than that would not be in the club’s best interests.
Marcus Bettinelli
Despite not playing a single game for Man City this season, Bettinelli signed a one-year contract extension, keeping him in the squad until 2027.
The Sky Blues need a third choice goalkeeper just in case of any injuries, and the fact Bettinelli is a homegrown player makes his presence useful.
Operating the Scott Carson role, the 34-year-old is not at Man City to start matches, but he does serve a purpose.
Will he have another year added to his contract before next season concludes? Maybe, but he is not going to contribute to competitive matches.
