- Foden pay rise reported
- City show long-term faith
- Guardiola patience continues
Manchester City have reportedly made a major financial call on Phil Foden as they prepare to back their academy graduate with a new long-term deal.
Phil Foden’s Man City future now appears close to being secured. However, the most interesting part of the reported agreement is not just the length.
The 25-year-old has endured a difficult spell this season. The England international has struggled for consistency despite once being one of the league’s most decisive players.
Nevertheless, City appear ready to offer Foden more than just security. The academy graduate is now reportedly in line for improved terms, making the club’s stance clearer.
Phil Foden new Man City contract includes pay rise
According to The Athletic, Foden has agreed terms on a new Manchester City contract until 2030. The report also claims that sources close to the deal suggest a pay rise in the 25-year-old’s extension.
The England international’s current contract was due in 2027. However, both parties have agreed to extend the deal in principle.
Despite a decline in Foden’s impact under Pep Guardiola, the club is willing to give the player another chance at the Etihad.
The Manchester-native came through the club’s academy and has been one of the most successful graduates of the system.
However, his falling down the pecking order was also linked to the arrival of Rayan Cherki and Antoine Semenyo.
Man City pay rise shows scale of Foden backing
With a pay rise in sight, it is clearly more than a routine extension. In the past, the Sky Blues have been ruthless with senior players nearing the end of their usefulness.
However, Foden’s situation is being judged through a different lens. At 25, he remains very valuable considering his past achievements.
City are paying to see the same Foden back who won them matches in previous seasons. However, the risk remains as the club is paying for something that might never come.
Foden now has to justify Man City’s faith
A pay raise and contract extension don’t guarantee a stay till expiration. Foden will now have to justify the faith and earn his spot at the Etihad.
The winger scored 19 goals and made eight assists in the 2023/24 season. He finished as the fifth-best goalscorer in the Premier League that season.
However, his form dropped in the following campaign, where he only made 20 starts for the club. He also managed only seven goals and two assists in the English top-flight.
Nevertheless, City have now shown that they see the England international as a long-term asset. However, whether the player can justify that belief remains to be seen.
