City are completing the formal signing process for Josko Gvardiol’s contract extension today, according to Fabrizio Romano, with the defender undertaking media duties to mark the occasion — the final step in a deal that has been in place since June.
This is confirmation rather than fresh news: City and Gvardiol’s camp reached agreement on personal terms last month, ending a saga that had run through much of the summer. What’s new today is the completion of the paperwork and the club’s official unveiling.
The contract will run until the summer of 2031 and includes a salary increase on his existing terms. Real Madrid pursued the Croatian for much of the summer, with Barcelona also registering serious interest at one stage, but City held firm throughout and were never close to sanctioning a sale.
Gvardiol joined City from RB Leipzig in 2023 for a fee of around £77m and had two years left on his previous deal before this extension. He was voted the club’s player of the year for 2025, ahead of Erling Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne, despite a mid-season setback after breaking his leg in a draw with Chelsea in January. He returned to full fitness in May and has since featured for Croatia at the World Cup.
The move is regarded as one of Hugo Viana’s most significant pieces of business since taking over as director of football, locking down a player capable of operating as either a left-sided centre-back or full-back heading into Enzo Maresca’s first season in charge. With Ruben Dias’s future still under consideration and Nathan Ake expected to leave, securing Gvardiol gives City a settled base to build their defence around.
