  • Manchester City have reportedly entered negotiations with Nottingham Forest’s Elliott Anderson
  • The midfielder could cost much less than previously reported fees
  • Anderson could be an ideal replacement for Rodri, who is linked with a move away

Manchester City have made contact with Nottingham Forest over a deal to sign England international Elliot Anderson.

Earlier today, it was reported that Man City were stalling their pursuit of long-term target Anderson due to ongoing contract negotiations with Rodri.

However, it has now emerged that the Citizens have started negotiations with Andeson’s camp, though talks between City and Forest are not advanced.

That is according to global transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, who has issued an update on the latest development in what is fast becoming a full-blown saga.

Manchester City are in talks over Elliot Anderson

Speaking via YouTube on Tuesday afternoon, Romano explained that City are extremely keen on Anderson, but wish to be respectful of Forest’s position in the Premier League relegation battle.

“Manchester City want the player,” he said. “City have started working on a deal to sign Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest.”

“[There is] still nothing advanced club to club because Man City want to respect Forest.

“Anderson is a crucial player for Forest in the relegation battle, so now is not the time to negotiate a transfer fee. We’ll have to see at the end of the season.”

While Man City are expected to face competition from rivals Manchester United, The Mirror have reported that Pep Guardiola’s team are now confident of beating them to Anderson’s signature.

The report goes on to mention that City believe a fee of around £65 million will be enough to complete a deal, far lower than the £120m figure previously reported.

Anderson could make for an ideal Rodri replacement

Alongside Man City’s interest in Anderson, the club have of course been trying to secure the future of 2024 Ballon d’Or winner Rodri, who has been linked with a move to Real Madrid.

Despite this, while Guardiola will be desperate to keep one of his top talents, bringing in Anderson could provide City with a ready-made replacement if Rodri does depart.

The 23-year-old has been excellent for Forest since joining from Newcastle United two seasons ago, and has developed into a senior England international.

Should he make the switch to the Etihad, Anderson may find himself tasked with replacing one of the best midfielders in City’s recent history. Still, he may well be up for the job.
