Three days into Man City verdict storm, the biggest question remains unanswered

Three days of claims, responses and analysis have still left Manchester City supporters waiting for the one thing that could bring clarity to the debate: a published ruling.

Since Thursday, the argument over City’s long-running Premier League case has moved quickly.

Reports of guilty findings have been followed by City’s insistence that the process remains ongoing, chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak telling supporters that “nothing has changed”, and increasingly detailed discussion of appeals, possible sanctions and compensation claims.

We’ve covered those developments extensively on Man City over the past few days. What hasn’t emerged publicly is the document at the centre of it all.

Man City debate continues without published ruling

The Guardian reported on Friday that sources familiar with the outcome said City had been found guilty on almost all of the charges against them.

The newspaper also reported that Premier League clubs had been informed of the outcome during Thursday’s shareholders’ meeting and required to sign non-disclosure agreements.

Those are significant claims and have driven much of the discussion since. City’s public response has been clear.

“The Premier League process remains ongoing, with significant elements to be completed, and subject to strict confidentiality,” the club said on Friday.

Khaldoon reinforced that position on Saturday, telling supporters that “nothing has changed” despite the noise surrounding the club. That leaves an unusual situation.

Detailed reports say findings have been reached and communicated privately. City maintain publicly that significant elements of the process remain to be completed. There has still been no published ruling or announcement of a sanction from the Premier League.

Focus shifts towards what happens next

After three days of debate, attention is increasingly turning towards what comes next. City have consistently denied wrongdoing and the Guardian reports that the club intends to appeal against a guilty verdict.

An appeal could open another lengthy stage in a case that has already stretched across years, while the absence of an announced sanction leaves the biggest practical question facing supporters unanswered.

What happens to City if the reported findings are confirmed? That uncertainty has produced plenty of discussion. We’ve already examined reports concerning potential compensation claims from rival clubs and the separate question of whether City’s Premier League titles could be affected.

Neither question can be answered definitively until more of the disciplinary process becomes public. For supporters who have followed every development since Thursday, another round of speculation adds little.

The next substantial development should provide something more concrete: publication of the panel’s findings, confirmation of any sanction, further information from the Premier League or greater clarity around the appeal City are reported to be preparing.

Until then, the debate continues with a significant part of the picture still hidden from public view.
