Man City could benefit from James Trafford’s decision on Newcastle transfer
  • James Trafford is unsettled at Man City
  • Linked with a move away from the club
  • Newcastle have rekindled their interest

James Trafford could leave Manchester City this summer, but only if he decides to push for a move away.

Man City did not have the best transfer window last season. Rayan Cherki may have turned out to be a bargain buy, but some recent arrivals have started very few matches.

As a result of their limited roles in the first-team, the likes of James Trafford and Tijjani Reijnders have been linked elsewhere.

Trafford in particular is a concern for City, as he has been open about his struggles as the second choice goalkeeper.

In fact, Man City seem so certain of his intentions to leave that Pierce Charles has already been identified as his replacement.

James Trafford does not want to decide his future yet

With Trafford’s frustrations well-documented, Newcastle United have re-entered the race to sign the England shot-stopper.

However, according to The Athletic, Trafford wants to prevent making a decision on his future until after the World Cup.

This might be too late for the Magpies, who will be looking to have as many players as possible in place for their pre-season preparations.

Additionally, no formal negotiations have taken place at this point in time, which increases Man City’s odds of keeping Trafford.

Losing Trafford would be a blow for Man City

Although Trafford has not been a regular starter for City, he has done exceedingly well in the domestic cup competitions.

The Sky Blues won both the Carabao and FA Cups, and it was the 23-year-old who appeared in every game.

Keeping clean sheets in each of the finals, Trafford showed that he is the type of goalkeeper that ought to be cherished.

A future number one

Gianluigi Donnarumma is by no means old, but he is still a few years further on in his career than Trafford.

The Englishman definitely has the potential to become City’s first choice in his position one day, but he needs more opportunities now.

It certainly feels like if Trafford were to join Newcastle, or another team, this would be an occurrence which could come back to haunt his current club.
