- New report emerges on Josko Gvardiol
- Defender eyeing Manchester City exit
- Contradicts what he himself said recently
Josko Gvardiol reportedly wants to leave Manchester City for one of Europe’s biggest clubs, but a new contract has not yet been ruled out.
This season has come with its struggles for Josko Gvardiol, who fractured his tibia against Chelsea at the beginning of the year.
The Croat spent months on the sidelines, missing the 2-0 Carabao Cup final victory over Arsenal in March.
And despite returning just before the FA Cup final, Gvardiol was not selected to appear in that match, which City won 1-0.
Josko Gvardiol wants to leave Man City
According to as.com, Gvardiol has offered himself to Real Madrid, and should Florentino Perez be re-elected as club president, the defender would become a potential transfer target.
Gvardiol’s desire to depart Man City is said to be because of Pep Guardiola’s exit – the man who insisted on signing him in the first place.
While the 24-year-old only has two years remaining on his contract, the Citizens are unwilling to make a loss.
Therefore, they will look to recoup at least the £77.6m it cost to bring the star to the Etihad Stadium three years ago.
Man City want Gvardiol to sign a new contract
Real Madrid are ready to invest ‘serious money’ to sign Gvardiol, but will not go crazy if Man City’s asking price is unrealistic.
But the Sky Blues are unlikely to sell their defender on the cheap. In fact, they are still hoping to convince Gvardiol that signing a new deal is the best option for his career.
There is an understanding that strength needs to be shown after Guardiola’s departure. Therefore, plans are in place to offer Gvardiol a pay rise as part of a contract extension.
Gvardiol’s desire to leave contradicts his own statement
Only a few days ago, Gvardiol claimed he was happy at Man City. In fact, he appeared to indicate that he has no plans to leave the club.
“Unfortunately, that moment came and he decided that his journey would end this season,” he said regarding Guardiola moving on.
However, Gvardiol later added: “I’m sure the club will choose the right new coach and continue where we left off.”
This does not sound like a man who wants to leave his current team. Rather, it appears he is eager to stick around to see how things go with Enzo Maresca.
