- Sverre Nypan has completed his first season at Man City
- Reflects on how much he has developed with the club
- Explains why he switched Rosenborg for the Sky Blues
Sverre Nypan has explained why he decided to leave his home country in order to pursue a move to Manchester City.
19-year-old Sverre Nypan broke onto the senior football scene at a young age, and last year he took the leap of faith from Rosenborg to Man City.
Nypan was loaned out to Middlesbrough in August, where he was supposed to get a good taste of English football.
However, his first-team opportunities there were very limited. In total, the teenager only made three Championship starts, prompting Man City to recall him.
Since then, Nypan has been playing in the Premier League 2, where he has recorded five goals in 11 appearances.
Sverre Nypan explains why he joined Man City
Nypan could have continued to be a big fish in a small pond, but he decided to leave Norway and sign for Pep Guardiola’s team.
And speaking to Man City’s official podcast, he has explained the thoughts which led him to making this decision.
“I felt like the connection was there and they really showed they wanted me a lot,” Nypan said.
“That’s something you like to hear. You want to go to a team that really believes in you. The plan that we made together sounded really nice but just getting the chance to train with the best players in the world, it’s only positive.
“Having Erling [Haaland] here now is helping and it’s nice to feel like a bit of home when you talk to a fellow Norwegian.”
He added: “I remember the first time I met them and worked with them was pretty cool because I’ve been a fan and watched City games since I was really young.”
Nypan has overcome some early setbacks
Arriving in England was always going to be a challenge for Nypan, and his time at Middlesbrough did not make life easy. However, he stood tall and kept going.
“The mindset and mentality you have is most important and I think I’ve developed the most there,” the midfielder continued.
“It’s been tough but I’ve also learned a lot. I didn’t play regularly at Middlesbrough but dealing with that, I’ve learned a lot from and now coming back to training with one of the best teams in the world and trying to do your best, it’s also a good learning experience.
“I feel like I’m much more ready for doing the best I can now and I’m a better footballer than I was last year.”
Will Nypan make his first-team at Man City this season?
Right now, a gap has opened up in City’s midfield. This is likely to be filled by Elliot Anderson, or whoever the club eventually sign. However, Nypan could be handed his first senior appearance at the Sky Blues.
There will be fixtures in the Carabao and FA Cups where younger players will be afforded opportunities, and Nypan will be eager to make an impression.
It simply depends which teams City draw, and whether Enzo Maresca will be able to risk giving youth team players their sneior debuts.
