Manchester City are looking to sign a defender who was once part of their ranks, yet failed to start a single game.

After losing out on the Premier League title, Man City are determined to come back stronger next season.

To do that, it is important that the weaker areas of the team are strengthened, and the right-back position immediately stands out.

Matheus Nunes has done a phenomenal job there this season, but he was required to start a staggeringly high number of matches towards the end of the campaign.

Man City are interested in signing Pedro Porro

According to as.com, Man City have initiated contact in hopes of agreeing a deal to bring Pedro Porro to the Etihad Stadium.

The Spain international is bound to Tottenham until 2028, but he is yet to sign a new contract with the North London club.

Spurs are looking to secure £50m for the defender, which is the same price City paid for Kyle Walker in 2017.

City’s need for Porro is questionable

Nunes has proven himself to be more than capable as a right-back, and really ought to continue as a regular starter next season.

This means if Porro joined, he would likely spend a fair amount of time on the bench, making £50m seems like a large sum to pay.

The 26-year-old’s defensive positioning is not the best, and he has been known to lose his temper and appear a bit erratic at times for Tottenham.

However, Porro is a very good crosser of the ball, and his attacking talents would prove useful at City.

In addition to this, he would play the inverted full-back role under Maresca, in a similar way to how Ange Postecoglou used his wide defenders at Spurs.

There is potential for a swap deal to be done

Man City and Tottenham could be talking to each other a lot this summer, as Savinho has been linked with a move to the Lilywhites.

James Trafford is also on Spurs’ radar. However, he is attracting interest from Aston Villa as well, making a move to the English capital less likely.

In order to finalise a deal for Porro more easily, the Citizens could look to include one of these players as part of a swap deal with Tottenham.

With Savinho valued at £60m, they could attempt to have Spurs pay £10m plus Porro in order to sign the Brazilian.

Whatever the case, City definitely have some leverage, which could prove useful in their pursuit of the player who previously made zero appearances for them in his previous spell.
