- Nico Gonzalez unhappy with his lack of minutes
- He could look to depart Man City this summer
- Interest received from clubs in two countries
Nico Gonzalez only joined Manchester City in February last year, but he could be on the move already.
When Man City signed Nico Gonzalez, it is likely that he was considered to be someone who could replace Rodri in the future.
Both players share similar attributes, and they even originate from the same country. However, this is looking less likely by the week.
The 24-year-old has spent a lot of time on the bench this season. In fact, he did not even match Pep Guardiola’s matchday squad for the FA Cup final, or the important Premier League fixture against Bournemouth.
Therefore, there is plenty of speculation as to whether Nico might be on his way out of the Etihad Stadium this summer.
Nico Gonzalez could leave Man City this summer
According to The Times, Nico is considering his future at the Citizens due to his lack of game time during the 2025/26 campaign.
The midfielder did make 41 appearances in all competitions, but he found himself on the bench all too often in games where the stakes were high.
During Man City’s final 17 Premier League matches, Nico was only in the starting lineup twice, prompting him to assess his options.
Nico has options outside England
Although Nico still has three years remaining on his contract, a move is seeming increasingly likely based on his circumstances.
Especially since the Spaniard is receiving interest from clubs in his home country, as well as some Italian sides.
Additionally, the potential arrival of Elliot Anderson would make Nico’s departure even more likely, given that the players share the same position.
Does Nico have a future at City?
It seems odd for a player to leave a club due to his game time when the manager who kept benching him is no longer there.
Nico could still have an opportunity to prove himself at Man City, particularly since he is a fine player, despite a somewhat disappointing season on an individual level.
However, Enzo Maresca is set to become City’s next manager, and he is keen on Enzo Fernandez.
Were the Sky Blues to sign both Anderson and Fernandez, that would likely ensure Nico’s role at the club would remain a minimalistic one if he decided to stay.
