  • Nico Gonzalez scored a long-range winner
  • The Spaniard says he ‘gave it everything’

Manchester City midfielder Nico Gonzalez scored an incredible long-range effort to send City to a record fourth consecutive FA Cup final by beating Southampton on Saturday.

Having struggled to break down their opponents, Pep Guardiola’s side fell behind with just ten minutes to play thanks to a spectacular effort from Saints’ Finn Azaz.

Jeremy Doku then equalised just moments later when his deflected effort found the bottom corner, before Gonzalez grabbed the winner from distance in dramatic fashion.

The 24-year-old’s stunning strike left Southampton keeper Daniel Peretz no chance, and snatched victory for the Carabao Cup winners.

Nico Gonzalez the hero for Manchester City

Speaking after scoring the winner, Gonzalez said he ‘gave it everything’ with his long-range effort, and talked about the incredible feeling of scoring at Wembley.

He told BBC Match of the Day: “I was waiting for the chance, and I had it, so I gave it everything, I shot with everything… and it went in!”

“It’s been a really important week, it’s been amazing, three wins, and we are alive in the league which was something that maybe one month ago we didn’t think we would arrive here with this chance. But it’s amazing to arrive in another final – this is my second.”

“It’s been a long time without playing and being here, being with this amazing stadium, with this atmosphere – it’s an amazing feeling!”

City reach an incredible fourth straight FA Cup final

While City are no strangers to Wembley, or cup finals, yesterday’s win made a remarkable piece of history.

The club has no reached a record four FA Cup finals in succession, something no other club has ever done before.

Having beaten rivals Manchester United in 2023, the Sky Blues then lost to the same opponents in 2024, before last season saw Crystal Palace claim a 1-0 victory to win the first major trophy in the Eagles’ history.

Now, City have the chance to win a second domestic trophy of the season, with an FA Cup final against either Chelsea or Leeds United.

The treble is still on for Man City

Earlier this season, few would have believed Man City could win a treble. However, last month’s Carabao Cup triumph and yesterday’s semi-final victory means that is now within their grasp.

The Premier League title race is set to go to the wire, with Arsenal’s 1-0 victory against Newcastle sending the Gunners back to the top of the table.

City will fancy their chances, though. With five games to go, they remain masters of their own destiny and on track to win a remarkable three domestic titles.
