Manchester City were ‘seriously’ considering Reece James transfer before Enzo Maresca received Chelsea sacking

Manchester City were lining up a bid for an England international until an unexpected twist occurred in January.

The right-back position is one of the most talked about at Manchester City, especially since the departure of Kyle Walker.

Matheus Nunes has done a good job filling the role this season, but it is often noted that he naturally plays as a midfielder.

Therefore, Man City have been looking to sign a right-back and it has been revealed that the club were targeting a player who has since agreed a new deal with his current club.

Manchester City wanted to sign Reece James

According to the Daily Briefing, Manchester City had their sights set on Chelsea’s Reece James when the defender was unhappy under Enzo Maresca.

The Sky Blues are said to be one of three clubs who were exploring a move for the player who had 22 caps for England.

However, Maresca was replaced by Liam Rosenior at the beginning of the year and he has since signed a new contract with the Blues.

Man City are still searching for a Kyle Walker replacement

January saw Man City complete the signing of Antoine Semenyo and Marc Guehi, but they are still yet to secure a right-back.

Tino Livramento has been heavily linked with Man City and there have been various other names mentioned in recent weeks.

It feels inevitable that a signing will be made to fill the current gap, but there is still work to do in identifying a player who can be as reliable as Walker was for so many years.
