Manchester City are three goals down after their visit to the Bernabeu, but Matheus Nunes has not ruled out his team’s chances of a comeback.
There are just two days to go until Manchester City look to do what seems almost impossible, by recovering a three-goal deficit against Real Madrid.
The Sky Blues were really poor in the first leg and Pep Guardiola has come under some criticism for his team selection, which involved benching Matheus Nunes.
However, the right-back will be hoping to start on Tuesday night in a match which could make or break Man City’s Champions Legaue campaign.
Matheus Nunes has not given up on the Champions League
There is surely an element of temptation for Man City’s players to forget about the Champions League and focus on other competitions instead.
For Matheus Nunes, this is not the case as he still believes in his team’s ability to deliver a result which would shock both Real Madrid and the European football scene as a whole.
Nunes told Man City: “We’ve seen these kinds of results happen in similar situations before in the Champions League and we know that anything is possible.
“A game is a game, and anything can happen. I’m sure that we’ll go in with the mentality to try and win knowing that it’s difficult, but it’s not impossible.
“It’s the part of the season which is the most exciting. Everyone wants to play in these kinds of games. We know this is the part where you win, but the beginning is also important for us to be here in the end,” he continued.
“This is where the pressure is on and where the big teams step up. We need to be very consistent and focus on winning every game at a time.
“When you have three days in between two games, you only have one day scratching your head.”
Nunes added: “Of course, you have to feel and think about it – not overthink – but genuinely think what went wrong, to learn and to not make [the] same mistakes we made.”
Man City have recorded some big wins this season
Across all competitions, Man City have won 10 matches by a margin of three goals or more this season, which is very impressive.
Real Madrid may be a very strong side, but the Citizen’s record speaks for itself. Getting another big win will be tricky, but it is not out of the question.
City will need to be strong in every area and Nunes will need to deliver movement, creativity and solid defending to boost his side’s chances of success.
