Steven Gerrard has called for City to face a points deduction and transfer ban lasting several years following the independent commission’s findings against the club.
The former Liverpool captain also believes there should be an asterisk against City’s achievements, regardless of whether any titles are stripped. City have appealed against the commission’s findings and maintain that they are wrong. No sanction has yet been imposed.
Gerrard wants points deduction and transfer ban
Speaking on The Overlap Daily, Gerrard argued against relegating City to the Championship, saying it would unfairly affect EFL clubs.
“I think it’s more about punishing them in the Premier League over a period of time,” he said. “A multi-year punishment would be my opinion. I’m not saying that’s the right option, but that’s how I feel.”
Gerrard said he would prefer sanctions which affected City for more than one season.
“I think it needs to be a transfer ban and a points deduction over a period of time. Make them suffer like they’ve made everyone else suffer for the last nine, ten years.”
The former England midfielder also called for City’s achievements to carry an asterisk.
“There needs to be an example set. There needs to be, at minimum, an asterisk against those achievements. Then it doesn’t matter whether the titles are stripped or not.”
Gerrard was giving his opinion on what the punishment should be rather than outlining any sanction being considered. City lodged their appeal on 1 October. A separate process will determine any punishment, with our Man City appeal explainer covering the timetable and what happens next.
