2008: A goalless first meeting

The first competitive meeting came in the UEFA Cup group stage in December 2008.

Mark Hughes was City’s manager and Joe Hart, Pablo Zabaleta and Vincent Kompany were among the players involved as the sides drew 0-0 at the City of Manchester Stadium. It remained their only meeting for more than seven years.

2016: De Bruyne sends City into first Champions League semi-final

City and PSG met again in the quarter-finals of the 2015-16 Champions League.

Kevin De Bruyne opened the scoring in the first leg in Paris before Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Adrien Rabiot put PSG ahead. Fernandinho equalised to secure a 2-2 draw for Manuel Pellegrini’s side.

De Bruyne scored again in the return match, his 76th-minute goal giving City a 1-0 victory and a 3-2 aggregate win. It took City into the Champions League semi-finals for the first time, where they were beaten by Real Madrid.

2021: City beat PSG to reach first final

Five years later, the clubs were drawn together in the Champions League semi-finals.

Marquinhos headed PSG ahead in the first leg at the Parc des Princes, but City responded after half-time. De Bruyne equalised before Riyad Mahrez scored from a free-kick to secure a 2-1 away win.

Mahrez was decisive again at the Etihad. The winger scored twice as Pep Guardiola’s side won the second leg 2-0 and completed a 4-1 aggregate victory. City had reached their first Champions League final, although Chelsea beat them 1-0 in Porto.

Messi scores as PSG claim first win

There was little time to wait for another meeting, with City and PSG drawn together in the group stage the following season.

PSG recorded their first victory over City in September 2021, winning 2-0 in Paris. Idrissa Gueye opened the scoring before Lionel Messi scored his first PSG goal following his move from Barcelona. City responded when the sides met at the Etihad two months later. Kylian Mbappe put PSG ahead shortly after half-time, but Raheem Sterling equalised before Gabriel Jesus completed a 2-1 comeback victory.

2025: City lose two-goal lead in Paris

The most recent meeting produced the highest-scoring game between the clubs.

City travelled to the Parc des Princes in January 2025 for a Champions League league-phase match and took control early in the second half. Jack Grealish scored in the 50th minute before Erling Haaland made it 2-0 three minutes later. The lead disappeared quickly.

Ousmane Dembele pulled one back in the 56th minute, and Bradley Barcola equalised four minutes later. Joao Neves put PSG ahead before Goncalo Ramos completed a 4-2 victory in stoppage time. It was PSG’s second victory over City in eight attempts and left Guardiola’s side needing a result in their final league-phase game to continue in the competition.

Man City v PSG: The numbers
