City moved three points clear at the top of the Premier League with Sunday’s 3-0 win at Liverpool, but uncertainty remains over what their position could look like once their financial case is concluded.
Second-half goals from Erling Haaland, Jeremy Doku and Rayan Cherki gave City an emphatic victory at Anfield and maintained their perfect start to the league season. City are still waiting to discover what sanction will follow the independent commission’s verdict, while the club has appealed against its findings.
Huge questions linger
Writing for The Athletic, Jacob Whitehead considered what a significant points deduction would mean for results such as Sunday’s.
“If Manchester City receive a hefty points deduction this season, their impressive victory over Liverpool will be thrown to the annals of time,” he wrote.
Whitehead described watching City while the outcome remains unresolved as a “surreal experience”, adding: “How are we supposed to separate what counts from what might not?”
The Athletic’s analysis also discusses the possibility of trophies being stripped. No sanction has been decided, however, and a separate hearing will determine any punishment arising from the commission’s findings.
City have lodged an appeal and maintain that their evidence can overturn the decision. The financial arguments at the heart of City’s appeal centre on the source and accounting treatment of sponsorship income during the period examined by the commission.
For now, Maresca’s side have won each of their opening six Premier League matches. Doku played a major part in the latest victory after coming off the bench and received our highest player rating at Anfield.
