City’s finances remained in focus on Monday as new analysis put owner funding during the first decade after the Abu Dhabi takeover at £2.209bn.
There was also fresh speculation around Erling Haaland after Real Madrid and Barcelona reportedly sent representatives to Anfield, while Oliver Holt called for broadcasters to stop showing City games live. Enzo Maresca’s side are back in action on Wednesday when Paris Saint-Germain visit the Etihad Stadium in the Champions League.
Here is the latest City news from Monday, 12 October.
Man City owner funding calculated at £2.209bn
The Athletic’s Chris Weatherspoon has calculated that City received £2.209bn in owner funding during the first decade following the 2008 takeover.
The total includes £921.4m which the independent commission found had not been properly reported, together with City’s reported shareholder funding and further equity provided in 2017-18.
The analysis put Chelsea next among Premier League clubs with £367m. Weatherspoon also calculated that City’s wages-to-revenue ratio would have been the highest in the division during the nine seasons covered by the false-accounting findings if sums deemed to be disguised owner funding were removed from revenue.
City have appealed against the commission’s findings and maintain that they are wrong.

Real Madrid and Barcelona watch Haaland
Real Madrid and Barcelona reportedly sent representatives to Anfield for City’s 3-0 victory over Liverpool, with Haaland among the players being watched.
The striker scored City’s opening goal after Ryan Gravenberch was sent off, before Jeremy Doku and Rayan Cherki completed a victory which made it six Premier League wins from six.
Haaland signed a nine-and-a-half-year contract in January 2025 which runs until 2034. City have rejected claims that his deal contains a release clause.

Holt calls for broadcasters to stop showing City games
Journalist Oliver Holt has called for Sky Sports and other broadcasters to stop showing City matches live until a punishment in the Premier League financial case has been decided.
Writing on X, Holt described City’s fixtures as “ghost games”. There is no indication that Sky Sports or another broadcaster is considering taking City matches off air. City have appealed against the commission’s findings, and no sanction has been imposed.
