Omar Marmoush makes ‘difficult’ confession about playing for Man City

  • Touches on the demanding environment at City

Omar Marmoush is preparing to compete at the World Cup, but he has taken the time to discuss his successes and struggles at Manchester City.

It has been a year and a half since Omar Marmoush joined the Citizens, and he has experienced plenty of ups and downs since then.

The striker arrived for a fee of £59m, so the expectations were high before he had even kicked a ball for City.

However, Erling Haaland has continued to be the club’s main centre forward, causing Marmoush to suffer from a lack of minutes.

In fact, there have even been questions asked of the Egypt international’s future, after a season where he only made 16 starts in all competitions.

Omar Marmoush has experienced some setbacks at Man City

Speaking with GQ India, Marmoush has been very honest about the struggles he has faced as a Man City player.

“It [the Premier League] has fulfilled all my expectations and more,” he said. “I would watch the Premier League a lot before I arrived, but to play here is different. It’s way more intense in real life.

On the competition at City, Marmoush added: “It’s difficult, but at the same time it makes you better, knowing that when you’re on the pitch you have to give your best. You have to perform because the next person is there, waiting to take your spot.

“This type of competition only serves to improve you as a player, because if you don’t play regularly you start to think, okay, what can I do to be better?

“My expectations of myself are always the same, but the demands on the pitch are much different here,” he continued.

“At City it’s not about winning today, or scoring some goals, it’s about winning titles.”

Marmoush still backs himself

While moving to City has not been an easy adjustment for Marmoush, he is still doing his best to make things work at the Etihad.

In fact, the attacker has highlighted how hard he had to work to earn the transfer, insisting he deserves to be where he is today.

Marmoush said: “As a kid you dream of being at a club like this. I trained hard to get here, you know?

“My whole career led up to this point – to compete and play with the best players in the world, trying to win titles. So, when the move came I knew I was ready.

“It wasn’t just that one or two years [that secured the transfer]. You build confidence over time, you learn your worth. So, when the move happened I knew I was supposed to be there.”

What does the future hold for Marmoush?

Having only signed for Man City last year, Marmoush still has three years remaining on his current contract.

Therefore, whether he leaves City this summer is entirely down to him. And this is a decision he is likely to base on his expected minutes.

Marmoush is entering the prime stage of his career, and being on the bench so often is not the way he will want to be spending it.

So if the Citizens cannot offer him more starts next season, a summer departure is certainly not out of the question.
