Man City in three-horse race to sign former academy star

Manchester City are looking to re-sign one of their former youth players, but there is strong interest from an additional two teams.

Many players have been linked with Man City over the past few weeks, most of whom occupy the midfield position.

The most prominent name to have emerged is Elliot Anderson, who wants his move to City finalised before England’s World Cup campaign begins.

And he is not the only Three Lions star on the club’s radar. Morgan Rogers is linked with Man City, and he is ready to leave Aston Villa this summer.

Man City are in a three-way battle for Morgan Rogers

According to TEAMtalk, Man City are heavily involved in discussions surrounding Rogers, and he is viewed as Bernardo Silva’s ‘ideal replacement’.

The 23-year-old is seen as someone who can become an important part of City’s team, and he himself would be up for a return to the Etihad Stadium.

However, both Arsenal and Chelsea are pushing to sign Rogers, who is valued at around £100m by his current club.

Why City are at a disadvantage

Man City have already had an offer rejected by Nottingham Forest for Anderson. If he does join the club, it will likely be for more than £100m.

That means the Citizens will have to smash their transfer record, which was previously broken when Jack Grealish was signed from Aston Villa.

It seems unlikely that much money would be spent again in the same transfer window, adding doubt to whether Rogers is really a realistic signing.

Having said that, the chances of more money being spent on midfielders will be raised if Rodri departs this summer.

Rogers is more attacking than Bernardo Silva

This season, Silva played as part of a central midfield pairing, rather than in the number 10 role behind Erling Haaland.

However, Rogers is more of an attacking player who would be best suited to slotting in further up the pitch.

The problem here is that City already have Rayan Cherki and Phil Foden, meaning Rogers might not be starting on a regular basis.

So while the Villa star is an excellent player, it is hard to see how he would directly replace Silva. Most likely, that is what Anderson is being brought in to do.
