City players spread across three of four World Cup semi-finalists

Man City are represented in three of the four nations that have reached the World Cup semi-finals, after England, Spain and France all secured their places over the past four days.

Nico O’Reilly, Marc Guehi, Elliot Anderson and James Trafford all featured in England’s squad for Saturday’s 2-1 extra-time win over Norway in the quarter-final.

Guehi played the full 120 minutes at centre-back, O’Reilly started at left-back before being substituted, Anderson also played the full match, and Trafford was an unused substitute. All four are through to Wednesday’s semi-final against Argentina in Atlanta.

Rodri started in midfield as Spain beat Belgium 2-1 in Friday’s quarter-final in Los Angeles, dictating play from the centre of the pitch as La Roja reached their first World Cup semi-final since their title-winning run in 2010.

Spain face France in Dallas on Tuesday. It also marked the end of the tournament for City’s Jeremy Doku, whose Belgium side were beaten by a late Mikel Merino goal after a mistake from substitute goalkeeper Senne Lammens.

Rayan Cherki was an unused substitute as France beat Morocco 2-0 in Boston on Thursday to reach the last four for the third World Cup running.

The France attacker has made cameo appearances from the bench throughout the tournament and has yet to start a match, but remains part of Didier Deschamps’ squad heading into the semi-final against Spain.

Argentina, the fourth semi-finalists and defending champions, do not currently include a City player, following a 3-1 extra-time win over Switzerland in Kansas City on Saturday.

City’s group now includes four current first-team players — O’Reilly, Guehi, Rodri and Doku — plus a player due to join the club this summer, Anderson. Haaland’s World Cup ended in the same quarter-final as O’Reilly and Guehi’s win over Norway.
