Man City not interested in signing Marc Cucurella from Chelsea

Man City not interested in signing Marc Cucurella from Chelsea
  • Man City have been linked with Marc Cucurella
  • Enzo Maresca said to be keen on the defender
  • Club no longer pursuing deal due to lack of need

Manchester City have been linked with Marc Cucurella, but he is no longer expected to reunite with Enzo Maresca.

The Citizens have not even appointed a new manager yet, but it seems obvious by this point that Maresca will become Pep Guardiola’s successor.

Already, Man City have been linked with a number of Chelsea players, such as Enzo Fernandez for example.

Marc Cucurella has also been mentioned as someone the Italian is keen on, but there has been a new twist in this supposed interest.

Manchester City are not looking to sign a new left-back

According to The Athletic, Man City have no plans to add a new left-back to their squad, putting to rest any rumours about signing Cucurella.

Nico O’Reilly has done exceptionally well in the position, and Rayan Ait-Nouri is also available as a backup option.

It could be that Cucurella instead returns to Spain, with Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid all exploring a deal.

Maresca could sign a right-back for City

Although Man City have enough cover on the left, signing a new right-back is considered a possibility during the summer transfer window.

Matheus Nunes has filled in there over the past season, and this is likely to continue for the foreseeable future.

However, the Portuguese defender was overworked towards the back end of the campaign, highlighting City’s need for an alternative option.

Maresca will have Rico Lewis at his disposal, but a loan move might be the best outcome for the young Englishman this summer.

Not pursuing Cucurella is the correct decision

It is important that Maresca looks at what Man City need, rather than signing players for sentimental purposes.

O’Reilly is good enough to be starting regularly at left-back, and Ait-Nouri has looked good since joining from Wolves.

City must instead focus on the areas which actually need reinforcements, including both the right-back and right-wing positions.

Additionally, adding at least one new midfielder is important, and something the club are actively working on.
