- Gvardiol recently returned from injury
- He is now wanted by Barcelona
- Man City forced to make decision
Manchester City have already made a decision on Josko Gvardiol’s future, with Barcelona sizing up the defender.
This season was far from ideal for Gvardiol, who suffered a broken tibia against Chelsea back in January.
The Croatia international was on the sideline for some time, missing important matches including the Carabao Cup final against Arsenal.
And since he had only just returned from injury, Gvardiol also failed to feature in the FA Cup final win over the Blues.
Provided he does not get injured again at the World Cup, the centre-back will be eyeing a better season next time around. However, will it be at Man City?
Barcelona are interested in Josko Gvardiol
According to the Daily Mail, Gvardiol has been the recipient of interest from Barcelona, who just won the La Liga title.
However, the 24-year-old is considered a crucial player at City, meaning the club have no intentions to approve his sale.
This is not really surprising, as Gvardiol was a regular starter before his injury at the start of the year. In total, he made 18 Premier League appearances this season.
Gvardiol is considering his options
The news a couple of days ago was that a number of clubs, including Barcelona, were interested in signing Gvardiol.
Real Madrid were also mentioned, as well as some of the biggest teams in Germany and Italy. And this has got the defender thinking.
His contract talks with Man City have stalled, and with only two years left on his deal, a move this summer is certainly not out of the question.
Despite this, the Citizens should be able to put forward a convincing argument which makes him want to stay.
Losing Gvardiol would be a blow for City
John Stones has played his final match for Man City, meaning a gap has opened up in the centre of defence.
Additionally, Nathan Ake could leave this summer, and like Gvardiol, he is someone who can play in the middle and on the left.
Still, Enzo Maresca is interested in Marc Cucurella. This could resolve any lack of depth out wide, but having Gvardiol as a centre-half option is still really important.
At 24 years old, he still has a lot to offer, and losing him in the next few months would make the new manager’s start far from ideal.
