Man City named as ‘serious contenders’ to sign Vinicius Jr from Real Madrid

  • Real Madrid contract issue emerging
  • Man City monitoring elite market opportunity
  • Rodri drama adds extra summer twist

Manchester City could be pulled into one of the most intriguing transfer situations of the summer as uncertainty grows around a major Real Madrid star.

Man City are expected to face another important summer with Pep Guardiola having multiple decisions to make.

The Sky Blues have already added attacking depth in recent windows with Antoine Semenyo, Jeremy Doku and Rayan Cherki.

However, questions around the long-term certainty of a few players mean another major move can’t be completely ruled out.

Man City named as ‘serious contenders’ for Vinicius Junior

According to TEAMtalk, Man City are preparing to join the race for Real Madrid star Vinicius Junior. The report claims that City are closely monitoring the forward’s situation.

The Brazilian’s exit is viewed as a genuine possibility if contract talks fail to progress. The winger has just over 12 months left on his current deal.

Likewise, negotiations over an extension are expected to be revisited this summer. However, TEAMtalk claims that Real Madrid won’t chase if talks fail this summer.

If Vinicius becomes available, City are considered ‘serious contenders’ to sign the Brazil international. Arsenal and Chelsea are also reported to be monitoring the winger.

Liverpool, Manchester United, Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain, and Saudi Pro League clubs have also been mentioned as a possibility.

Vinicius Junior would be rare market opportunity for Man City

Players like Vinicius Junior are rarely available in the market in their prime years. He has already won major honours with Los Blancos and has played decisive roles in these campaigns.

City already have quality on the flanks, but Vinicius brings a different level of individual threat on the left flank.

He has already scored 15 goals in La Liga this season. The Brazilian has also managed five assists in 29 Spanish top-flight starts.

Vinicius is the fifth-highest goalscorer in La Liga and has taken the most shots on target (44) for a left winger in the league.

His creative numbers also justify the interest he is receiving. The Real Madrid winger created 65 chances in La Liga this season, ranking among the top 5.3% of left wingers in the league.

Rodri angle makes Real Madrid links even more interesting

The most intriguing part of the story is Rodri’s connection to Real Madrid and his 2024 Ballon d’Or win. The Spanish midfielder has regularly been rumoured to be leaving for Los Blancos in the near future.

Rodri’s contract expires in June 2027, and the player himself has talked about living in Madrid on multiple occasions.

However, this would create a contrast following his Ballon d’Or win in 2024. Rodri beat Vinicius Junior to win the award, and Real Madrid boycotted the ceremony in disbelief.

Now, a transfer situation involving both players would therefore carry an extra narrative beyond the football logic.

City wouldn’t want to lose Rodri, and Los Blancos aren’t keen on letting Vinicius go either. But if the players held the opposite wishes, it’ll be interesting to see what the clubs end up doing.
