Manchester City Keep or Sell: Phil Foden, Rodri and Mateo Kovacic

  • Man City have decisions to make this summer
  • Some players approaching the end of their contracts
  • Not all will be renewed

Manchester City need to make some decisions this summer on who deserves a new contract, including names as big as Phil Foden.

This is our verdict on each player whose contract expires within the next year, and whether or not they should be handed a new deal.

Bernardo Silva – Decision already made

The departure of Manchester City’s captain has been confirmed, meaning there is no choice for the club to make.

Silva has been immense over the years and his exit will be difficult to take. However, it is probably the right time for him to try something new.

John Stones – Sell

It is expected that John Stones will leave Man City this summer, which is definitely the correct decision.

Even if the centre-back was not so prone to injuries, City have plenty of options to fill the position. In fact, Guardiola has three exceptional players in Abdukodir Khusanov, Marc Guehi and Ruben Dias.

Of course, there is also Josko Gvardiol who should be back in action next month, while Vitor Reis will return from his loan move to Girona in the summer.

Nathan Ake – Sell

Like Stones, Ake is now 31 years old and he is not going to be a regular starter at Man City. Therefore, his best option is to depart.

The Dutchman has been a useful asset over the years and he even started the Carabao Cup final, but the Citizens have the coverage they need in the centre-back and left-back positions.

Mateo Kovacic – Sell

City may be losing a talented midfielder in Silva, but it seems likely that they will sign Elliot Anderson this summer.

Nico O’Reilly can play as a midfielder, and there is always the option to move Matheus Nunes back there if the Sky Blues sign a new right-back or two.

Ultimately, Kovacic has missed almost a whole season due to his injury issues and he is not getting any younger.

Rodri – Keep

Man City will not want to lose Rodri as early as this summer, considering Silva is on his way out of the club.

However, it would make no sense for the Spaniard to be kept, only to leave as a free agent one year down the line.

The only logical move is for City to tie him down to a new contract, one which ideally lasts until 2030.

Phil Foden – Sell

Things are getting congested in Man City’s attack, with a lot of talented players all fighting for their place in the first-team.

Rayan Cherki is fast becoming undroppable and Antoine Semenyo was not brought to the club as a back-up option.

Right now, Foden is not playing much and it is hard to see how this will change, which makes handing him a new contract a bit futile. The best call is to sell the academy graduate this summer, sad as it may be.

Marcus Bettinelli – Keep

It was confirmed a few days ago that Marcus Bettinelli signed a contract extension, which means the club still see it necessary to keep hold of him.

With James Trafford’s future up in the air, the best call is to allow Bettinelli to see out the length of his new deal.

However, he has never started a game for the Citizens and this is unlikely to change unless Gianluigi Donnarumma picks up an injury.
