- Marcus Bettinelli recommits to Man City
- Signs new short-term deal
- Could step up as primary backup option
Marcus Bettinelli has put pen to paper on a deal at Manchester City, which should cause intrigue about what role he could play if James Trafford leaves this summer.
Gianluigi Donnarumma and James Trafford have been Manchester City’s goalkeeping options this season, but there is a lesser known shot-stopper in their ranks.
Marcus Bettinelli has been a member of Pep Guardiola’s squad since last summer, but he is yet to make an appearance.
Interestingly, the 33-year-old spent his previous four years at Chelsea, where he failed to play a single Premier League fixture.
Marcus Bettinelli signs new Man City contract
Despite Bettinelli’s lack of minutes, he has decided to sign a new contract with Man City which will keep him at the club until next summer.
This comes amid rumours that Trafford might leave Man City, the player who has been second choice to Donnarumma this season.

“It’s a great feeling knowing I’ll be at Manchester City for another season. It’s a real privilege to be here and I’m learning so much every day,” Bettinelli said.
“The staff have been superb – I have felt really supported since day one.
“My job is to be the best I can be, push our other goalkeepers and ensure that, as a group, we are improving. I think we are definitely doing that.”
Bettinelli has not played a match in four years
While Bettinelli used to be a regular starter back when he played for the likes of Middlesbrough and Fulham, he has spent a long time watching on from the sidelines.
Indeed, the goalkeeper last started a match in January 2022 when Chelsea smashed Chesterfield in the FA Cup.
This makes it rather strange that he has been able to join two of the Big Six teams in his career. Then again, it certainly helps that the former England youth international is a homegrown player.
Bettineill is unlikely to replace Trafford
The fact Bettinelli is sticking around potentially allows him the chance to compete for Trafford’s spot if the 23-year-old decides to quit Man City.
However, Man City have been linked with Pierce Charles as his potential replacement, a goalkeeper who is much younger and has long-term potential.
It would make no sense to sell Trafford, only to promote the current third choice player in this position. That is quite literally a downgrade.
Most likely, City will sign a new keeper and Bettinelli will remain third choice, only having even the slightest of chances to play if Donnarumma gets injured.
