  • Bosnia have knocked Italy out of World Cup qualifying
  • Gianluigi Donnarumma repeatedly made saves
  • The goalkeeper was still unable to prevent a defeat

Gianluigi Donnarumma will not be playing at the World Cup this summer, as Italy have been defeated in their qualifying play-off fixture.

Italy have not played at the World Cup since 2014, meaning Gianluigi Donnarumma has never started a game in international football’s most prestigious competition.

The Manchester City shot-stopper has been attempting to change this and he did his job when Italy beat Northern Ireland last week.

However, the goalkeeper was unable to keep another clean sheet in Italy’s final World Cup qualifying match, as the Euro 2020 winners suffered a shock exit to Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Gianluigi Donnarumma will not play at the World Cup

Donnarumma made 10 saves during Italy’s clash with Bosnia, but he made a mistake which ultimately cost his team.

The goalkeeper made a clearance which went only as far as the halfway line. The hosts immediately launched a counter attack which caused Alessandro Bastoni to commit a last man foul. Unsurprisingly, the defender was shown a straight red card.

In the second half, Donnarumma was booked for protesting after Bosnia scored an equaliser. However, his saves kept Italy in the game.

Despite this, Bosnia won the match 4-1 on a penalty shootout, with Donnarumma unable to make a single stop.

Donnarumma has had a rough few weeks

It was not all that long ago that Donnarumma conceded five goals across two legs against Real Madrid in the Champions League.

Man City bounced back with a Carabao Cup triumph, but the 27-year-old was forced to watch on from the bench.

And now, he will not be heading to the World Cup, after losing a penalty shootout for only the second time in his career.

The Italian can only hope he does not suffer the same fate in the FA Cup this Saturday. Then again, it is possible James Trafford will start the match anyway.
