Manchester City denied Champions League final rematch as Inter crash out

Manchester City no longer have any chance of facing Inter Milan in the Champions League last 16 after the events of Tuesday night.

Inter Milan have a rich history in European competitions, but they have fallen to defeats in their past two Champions League finals. Manchester City were one of these teams to inflict misery on the Italian side, when Pep Guardiola led them to victory in the 2022/23 final.

The game was separated by fine margins as just the one goal by Rodri decided the match, allowing Man City to lift the Champions League trophy for the very first time.

There was a chance Man City would face off against Inter again this season at a much earlier stage of the tournament, but this is no longer possible due to the Serie A team’s early exit.

Manchester City could face Bodo/Glimt in Champions League last 16

Inter would have been the favourites to come out of their Champions League play-off tie unscathed, but Bodo/Glimt have pulled off yet another upset.

The Norwegian runners-up claimed a 3-1 victory over Inter last week and followed this up on Tuesday with a 2-1 triumph at the San Siro, winning the tie 5-2 on aggregate.

This means Manchester City now have a 50 per cent chance of drawing Bodo/Glimt in the round of 16. Real Madrid and Benfica are their other possible opponent and Guardiola’s team will have learned which of these sides have made it through by the end of the night.

Man City have already suffered a defeat to Bodo/Glimt

Bodo/Glimt are not new to pulling off big results in Europe, but what they are doing right now in the Champions League is quite extraordinary.

Kjeti Knutsen’s men have already gotten the better of City once this season, winning 3-1 at the Aspmyra Stadium back in January.

They will be high on confidence after another unexpected victory, so Man City must be wary in case a rematch with the giantkillers becomes a reality.
