Manchester City are chasing Spanish midfielder Sergio Gil of Real Zaragoza, according to L’Equipe journalist Gilles Favard. The youngster made his proper breakthrough into the senior team last season, and could now move to Manchester to become part of a revamped City squad under Pep Guardiola.

This move would represent the latest in a growing number from Spain’s Segunda Division, where Zaragoza are currently plying their trade. Last summer saw the arrivals of Ruben Sobrino and Florian Lejeune from Ponferradina and Girona respectively, with both then spending the year at Girona last season. However, both Sobrino and Lejeune were at least three years older when they signed than Gil is now.
The 20-year-old made his most appearances yet for the Zaragoza team last season in Spain’s second tier, with 17, although largely off the bench. He was an unused substitute a further 12 times. Last season also saw his Copa del Rey debut against Llagostera, but Gil was unable to prevent his team falling to a 2-1 defeat.
Following the £42 million arrival of John Stones from Everton, City’s transfer business for the summer looks to be almost over. Attacking players in the form of Leroy Sane and Nolito have arrived (as well as Gabriel Jesus, who finishes his loan spell at Palmeiras in December), while Pep Guardiola will hope to shape Ilkay Gundogan into the fulcrum of his team once he returns to fitness. Sergio Gil could sign as a final touch to the summer, adding to the wealth of young talent currently at the club.
