Three Premier League games into his Manchester City career, Elliot Anderson already has a record to his name.
The City midfielder completed 146 passes in Saturday’s 1-0 win over Coventry at the Etihad.
According to Opta, that’s the most by an English midfielder in a Premier League game since their records began in 2003/04. City themselves have gone one better, describing it as a record for any English player over that period.
Anderson saw plenty of the ball
The previous best was Jordan Henderson’s 144 completed passes for Liverpool against West Brom in 2020, while Paul Scholes and Michael Carrick both had games in which they completed 135.
Anderson also had 178 touches against Coventry. So, yes, he was fairly busy.
There had already been signs of this against Crystal Palace, where the 23-year-old attempted 100 passes while also making five tackles and three interceptions. The Coventry game took the passing numbers to another level.
Of course, nobody gets a trophy for completing 146 passes, and City had to work harder than expected for their 1-0 win. But Anderson was signed to give Enzo Maresca’s midfield energy, control and quality on the ball. Three league games in, he’s certainly seeing plenty of it.
