Maresca makes League One admission amid Man City relegation questions

Enzo Maresca has responded to questions over whether he would remain at Man City if the club were relegated.

City are appealing after being found guilty of breaches of Premier League financial rules, with their punishment still to be decided. Maresca was asked about the situation during Friday’s press conference ahead of City’s trip to Liverpool.

Asked whether he would stay if the club were relegated, the Italian referred to his previous spell with Leicester City.

“I won the Championship with Leicester, so in case ‘League One’, we are going to see,” he said. Maresca was quick to point out that he was being asked about a situation which may never happen.

Maresca focused on Man City title challenge

Rather than dwell on possible sanctions, the City boss wants his players concentrating on their position at the top of the Premier League.

“At this moment we are top of the league, so the players have every reason to be happy and excited,” he added.

That has been a consistent theme from Maresca since the verdict. He has backed the club and attempted to keep attention on football, with Sunday’s game at Anfield the immediate concern.

The League One remark will understandably make headlines, but Maresca stopped well short of committing to what he would do if City were relegated. There are still too many unknowns for that.

What City do know is that they have a title race to concentrate on, and a trip to Liverpool is next up.
