Man City news: Appeal finances, Staveley comments and Liverpool preparations

City’s appeal against the Premier League’s financial ruling has prompted further examination of the club’s sponsorship arrangements, while Amanda Staveley has called for a resolution to the dispute.

There has also been fresh reporting on City’s transfer plans, a typically wry intervention from José Mourinho and, away from the legal arguments, preparations for Sunday’s Premier League trip to Liverpool.

Here is our 7pm round-up of the latest Man City news for Thursday, 8 October.

Sponsorship funding at the heart of City appeal

A detailed investigation by Chris Weatherspoon in The Athletic has examined the financial arrangements central to City’s dispute with the Premier League.

The independent commission concluded that £830.7m recorded through sponsorship agreements between 2009 and 2018 had effectively been funded by Abu Dhabi United Group, the investment vehicle behind City’s ownership, rather than the sponsors themselves.

City dispute that conclusion. Their position is that the relevant financial assistance came from the Abu Dhabi government rather than the club’s ownership group.

Our analysis of the key financial question in City’s Premier League appeal explains why the source of those payments is central to the club’s challenge.

The commission found City guilty of 114 of the 115 charges considered, but the club have appealed and continue to maintain their innocence. No sporting sanction has yet been announced.

Staveley calls for a resolution

Amanda Staveley, who helped broker Sheikh Mansour’s takeover of City in 2008, has urged football to find a way through the dispute.

Speaking at the Leaders conference at Stamford Bridge, Staveley acknowledged the competing demands facing Premier League executives and called for greater cooperation between clubs.

As detailed in our report on Staveley’s comments about the City case, she argued that the Premier League’s global appeal should be protected and encouraged those involved to build bridges.

Her remarks did not address the merits of the commission’s findings or suggest that an agreement was imminent.

Transfer planning continues as Mourinho weighs in

City are reportedly continuing their recruitment work for 2027 despite the uncertainty surrounding their appeal.

As reported in our article on City’s transfer plans during the Premier League appeal, Brentford right-back Michael Kayode is among the players being monitored, with Chelsea’s Malo Gusto also of interest.

The original report, from TEAMtalk’s Graeme Bailey, suggests City intend to proceed with their usual recruitment planning while the disciplinary process continues. There is no confirmed formal approach for either player.

José Mourinho also offered his thoughts on the length of the proceedings.

In an interview with Corriere dello Sport, the former Chelsea and Manchester United manager joked that he might be 80 before a final decision is reached.

Our report on Mourinho’s joke about the City case covered his comments, which reflected the prospect of further legal proceedings rather than any new development in the appeal itself.

Liverpool trip brings football back into focus

Enzo Maresca’s immediate concern is Sunday’s trip to Anfield, where City will attempt to extend their perfect start to the Premier League season.

Five victories from five matches have put City in a strong early position, although Liverpool will provide a demanding test following the international break.

Our Liverpool v Man City television and streaming guide has the match details, including the 4.30pm kick-off and live coverage on Sky Sports Premier League and Main Event.

Erling Haaland’s condition will be among Maresca’s considerations after a demanding international programme with Norway. His withdrawal against Portugal was subsequently attributed to fatigue rather than a confirmed injury.

Antoine Semenyo and Nico O’Reilly also returned early from international duty with fitness concerns, as detailed in our final Man City international break review.

That review also records Haaland’s three goals for Norway, Iliman Ndiaye’s winner for Senegal and Rayan Cherki’s assist for France.

Maresca will assess his returning players before Sunday’s match, with City seeking a sixth successive league victory.
