Maresca dismisses suggestion Man City trophies are tainted

Enzo Maresca says he does not believe Man City trophies have been tainted by the verdict in the club’s financial case.

The City manager faced the question at his press conference on Friday, ahead of Sunday’s Premier League game at Liverpool. Asked directly whether he now viewed the club’s previous trophies as tainted, Maresca replied: “Absolutely not.”

Maresca knows plenty about how one of those trophies was won. He worked alongside Pep Guardiola during the 2022/23 season, when City completed the Treble by winning the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League.

Maresca stands by Man City achievements

As reported by Sky Sports, Maresca spoke about the amount of work involved in that Treble season when answering the question. He was part of Guardiola’s staff throughout the campaign before leaving to take charge of Leicester City that summer. His time working with those players and coaches clearly shapes his opinion of what they achieved.

City have appealed against the verdict and are waiting for that process to play out. In the meantime, Maresca has been faced with a string of questions about the case and what it could mean for the club. On the suggestion that City’s trophies should now be viewed differently, however, there was little hesitation in his answer.
