City’s frantic summer showed little sign of slowing on Wednesday, with developments surrounding Enzo Fernandez, Adam Wharton and Alex Scott, while Newcastle and Tottenham continued to circle two members of Enzo Maresca’s squad.
Away from transfers, Premier League chief executive Richard Masters also addressed the increasingly lengthy wait for a verdict in City’s financial case.

Masters responds as questions grow over City case
The day’s most significant non-transfer story came from the Premier League, where Richard Masters was asked whether the continued wait for a verdict in City’s financial case had become a credibility issue for the competition.
Masters did not accept that premise, but he did acknowledge that the process has taken “longer than expected” and said he understood the frustration surrounding the delay.
The independent commission hearing concluded in December 2024 and there remains no public timetable for a verdict.
City set their limit over Enzo Fernandez
Enzo Fernandez remains firmly on City’s radar, but there now appears to be a clear dividing line between interest and what the club are prepared to spend.
City sources insist they will not pay Chelsea’s £120m valuation of the Argentina international, according to TEAMtalk’s Graeme Bailey.
That does not necessarily end City’s interest, but unless Chelsea soften their position, the numbers currently leave the clubs some distance apart.

Wharton emerges in post-Rodri rebuild
Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton is another name back in the conversation as City consider how to reshape the midfield following Rodri’s move to Barcelona.
Wharton has been linked with City before, but the circumstances have changed substantially following the departures of Rodri and Bernardo Silva.
There is no suggestion that City have made an offer, and Palace would be reluctant sellers, but the England international adds another intriguing option to a list that already includes Fernandez and Lille teenager Ayyoub Bouaddi.

Fresh contact over Alex Scott
City have also opened talks with Bournemouth over Alex Scott, according to Italian journalist Nicolò Schira.
The 22-year-old had already been linked with the Etihad earlier in the summer, but the latest report suggests City’s interest may have progressed beyond simply monitoring him.
Bournemouth’s position remains important: Scott is not for sale and the Cherries have been working to secure him on a new long-term contract.

Tottenham face huge Savinho price
There was also movement around one of City’s potential departures.
Tottenham’s interest in Savinho remains alive, but reports on Wednesday suggested City have placed a €100m (£86m) valuation on the Brazilian.
That represents a considerable increase on some of the figures discussed earlier in the summer and leaves Spurs with a major decision if they intend to pursue the 22-year-old.
City would also need to consider how Savinho could be replaced if a deal is eventually agreed.

Newcastle move for Nico Gonzalez
Nico Gonzalez could also be heading for the exit.
Newcastle have opened talks with City over the Spanish midfielder, with City prepared to consider a sale little more than 18 months after paying Porto £50m for him.
The discussions remain at an early stage, but Gonzalez’s position has become increasingly uncertain during City’s midfield overhaul.
His departure would be particularly striking given that Pep Guardiola once described him as a “mini Rodri”.

Transfer tracker: City’s rebuild in full
Taken together, Wednesday’s stories underline just how much business could still be done before the window closes.
Elliot Anderson, Jeremy Monga and Geronimo Rulli are among the confirmed arrivals, while a deal for Bouaddi has been reported as agreed but is still awaiting official confirmation.
Fernandez, Scott and Wharton are among the midfield names being discussed, while Savinho and Gonzalez could yet join a substantial list of departures.
With Maresca preparing for the start of the Premier League season, the make-up of his final squad remains far from settled.
