City held talks with the Premier League over a possible settlement in their financial case before the guilty verdict was made public, according to Bloomberg.
The discussions are said to have included the possibility of City making a substantial financial payment instead of facing sporting sanctions. No agreement was reached, and the talks broke down at an early stage.
Man City and Premier League discussed settlement
Bloomberg reports that a proposed deal could have involved a financial payment rather than punishments such as relegation or having titles stripped.
Given the number of charges involved, Bloomberg says any agreement was unlikely to have settled the entire case. Instead, it could have reduced the number of issues which went before the commission.
City and the Premier League both declined to comment on the talks when approached by Bloomberg. The case went ahead and City were found guilty of breaches of the Premier League’s financial rules.
City have appealed and continue to dispute the findings, arguing that the judgment contains errors of “law, principle and fact”. The settlement talks came before the verdict was announced. Attention has since moved to City’s appeal, with the club attempting to overturn the commission’s findings.
