City spent £1.388billion on new players across the nine seasons examined in their Premier League financial case, according to figures published by The Athletic.
The spending began to accelerate in 2009, the first full season following the Abu Dhabi United Group takeover. Carlos Tevez was among the arrivals as City began building a squad capable of challenging at the top of the Premier League.
The numbers from that summer show how heavily City were spending compared with the rest of the division.
Man City spent £128m net in 2009
The Athletic reports that City had a net spend of £128million on players in 2009. The other 19 Premier League clubs spent £145m net between them.
Tevez arrived after two seasons with Manchester United and scored 74 goals in 148 appearances for City. He was part of the side that won the FA Cup in 2011 before City claimed the Premier League title a year later.
The Athletic calculates that City’s spending on new players reached £1.388bn across the nine years covered by the financial charges.
An independent commission found City guilty of serious breaches of the Premier League’s financial rules during that period, including findings relating to owner funding being presented as sponsorship revenue.
City reject the findings and have appealed the verdict.
The £1.388bn figure covers a period in which City’s squad was transformed. Tevez was joined by players including Yaya Toure, David Silva and Sergio Aguero, with City winning three Premier League titles between 2012 and 2018.
