A clause in Pep Guardiola’s ongoing City Football Group (CFG) contract could complicate any future move into international management, according to a report from the Manchester Evening News.
Guardiola was regularly linked with the England job during his time at Man City, having established himself as one of the most successful managers in the modern game. He has, however, despite leaving the Etihad, maintained a contract with CFG to provide managerial and coaching advice to other clubs within the group.
The Manchester Evening News reports that while the clause is primarily designed to prevent Guardiola from joining another Premier League club immediately after leaving City, it could also have implications should the Football Association pursue the Spaniard in the future.
Guardiola has previously spoken about his desire to manage at international level at some stage in his career, although he consistently stressed that his focus remains on City. But now that no longer stands, of course.
Speculation around the England role has continued following the Three Lions’ World Cup campaign.
There is no suggestion Guardiola, who left the Etihad in May, is interested in the England job and the report does not indicate that the Football Association has made any approach.
Instead, it offers an insight into one of the contractual details that could shape discussions should England revisit their long-standing interest in the City manager.
