Manchester City goalkeeper Oliver Whatmuff is set to join Stockport County on a season-long loan, according to Manchester Evening News journalist Simon Bajkowski.
The 18-year-old, who impressed during a loan spell at Rochdale last season, is expected to spend the 2026-27 campaign with the League One club as City continue his development.
The move will not be completed immediately, however.
Bajkowski reports that Whatmuff will first return to Manchester City later this month for the club’s pre-season programme before departing on loan. He is also expected to be included in Pep Guardiola’s squad for the club’s pre-season tour before linking up with Stockport.
The decision reflects City’s continued faith in one of the academy’s most highly regarded young goalkeepers.
Whatmuff signed his first professional contract with City in 2025 before joining Rochdale on loan, where he enjoyed an outstanding campaign. He helped the club secure promotion back to the English Football League and was named in the National League Team of the Season after keeping 18 clean sheets.
A move to Stockport would represent the next stage of his development, offering the England youth international the opportunity to gain further experience in senior football while remaining firmly in City’s long-term plans.
City have regularly used the loan system to aid the progress of academy prospects, and Whatmuff’s latest move is expected to provide another important test as he continues his development.
