Man City handed Josko Gvardiol transfer boost after Bayern Munich decision
  • Man City want Gvardiol to sign a new contract
  • Real Madrid and Bayern have shown interest
  • The Croat defender is yet to make up his mind

Manchester City have moved one step closer to keeping Josko Gvardiol, but one potential problem still remains.

The situation surrounding Gvardiol has had its twists and turns, with some conflicting reports emerging already since the season ended.

Last week, it was claimed Gvardiol wanted to swap Man City for Bayern Munich. However, this came after comments from the defender himself which suggested he was happy at City.

And then most recently, the general consensus has been that Gvardiol will sign a new contract with the Citizens.

Bayern Munich are no longer pursuing Josko Gvardiol

While there are no guarantees Gvardiol is going to put pen to paper on a new deal, he is more likely to stay at Man City due to a new development.

According to Florian Plettenberg, Bayern Munich have ‘100 per cent’ dropped out of the race to sign the 24-year-old.

The German club admire him a lot, but have no need for a defender. Additionally, he is viewed as too expensive.

Gvardiol has two options on the table

While it is excellent news for City that Bayern are no longer considering Gvardiol as a potential signing, his future has not been secured yet.

Real Madrid still have ‘concrete’ interest in the dynamic defender, and could look to swoop in  with an offer this summer.

Should this happen, it will be up to Gvardiol to decide whether he moves to Spain, or renews with Man City.

Ultimately, the club could look to keep hold of him no matter what. However, refusing to approve his departure does not bode well when he only has two years remaining on his current deal.

Man City do not want the hassle of signing another defender

Back in February, Marc Guehi was signed from Crystal Palace, giving the Sky Blues a strong backline, particularly in the central areas.

However, Gvardiol’s departure could well see another signing needing to be made, which would be a massive inconvenience.

City already have positions at right-back, midfield and on the wing which need filling, so keeping Gvardiol would very much be viewed as a relief.
