Neil Warnock backs Vincent Kompany’s decision not to manage Man City – “You don’t want to follow Pep”
  • Pep Guardiola expected to leave Man City
  • Enzo Maresca most likely to take over
  • Vincent Kompany not interested in role

Neil Warnock has revealed why he believes Vincent Kompany is right not to pursue the managerial position at Manchester City which could soon open up.

Pep Guardiola would have us believe that he has not made a decision on his future, but various news outlets have reported otherwise.

It is commonly thought that Guardiola will step down after the Aston Villa game, allowing a new manager to come in ahead of next season.

Lots of managers have been linked with the club, including ex-Citizen Vincent Kompany, However, Enzo Maresca is expected to take over from the six-time Premier League winner.

Neil Warnock praises Vincent Kompany for avoiding Man City job

Managing a club of Man City’s size is a great honour, and Neil Warnock believes Maresca is lucky to be considered for the role.

Despite this, being as successful as Pep Guardiola will be extremely difficult, which is why Warnock thinks Kompany has made the right choice not to go for it.

“I think Vincent Kompany hit the nail on the head when they asked him about it,” he told talkSPORT

“You don’t want to follow Pep, you want to follow somebody else that’s followed Pep.”

City’s Premier League disappointment will help whoever comes next

If Maresca does get the Man City job, he might be feeling quite relieved that they have missed out on the Premier League title.

After all, coming in right after a domestic treble triumph would increase expectations to an even greater degree.

Whereas now, lifting the Premier League trophy next season will be viewed as an aspiration, rather than an essential way for the new coach to prove himself.

In addition to this, Guardiola’s last couple of seasons in the Champions League have not been good, so there is a chance to progress further in that competition.

Kompany still has a job to do at Bayern Munich

Most Man City fans would probably have been glad to see Kompany succeed Guardiola as the club’s new manager, but he still has unfinished business at Bayern.

The Bundesliga outfits were the favourites to win this season’s edition of the Champions League. However, they were defeated by reigning champions PSG in the semi-finals.

But with a strong squad at his disposal, Kompany will be feeling that a European success could be achieved next season.

Perhaps once this has been accomplished, then he might consider returning to the Etihad Stadium one day.

For now though, it looks like Maresca will be the man attempting to build on Guardiola’s superb legacy.
