- Man City could end season with domestic treble
- Carabao Cup already won
- No legacy damage to Guardiola if only one triumph recorded
Joleon Lescott has leapt to defend Pep Guardiola in case Manchester City fail to win another trophy this season.
Winning silverware is what Manchester City have become known for in recent years, particularly since the arrival of Pep Guardiola.
The manager has lifted 19 pieces of silverware during his time in England, and he still has the chance for two more before the season ends.
City play Chelsea in the FA Cup final this weekend, while they are two points behind Arsenal with a couple of matches remaining in the Premier League.
Joleon Lescott defends Pep Guardiola’s legacy
There are no guarantees in football, so it is still possible that Man City will end up losing to Chelsea on Saturday, before falling short to the Gunners.
This would be a huge blow for Guardiola in what could be his last season at City. However, ex-Citizen Joleon Lescott reckons this will have no effect on the legacy he will leave behind.
"I don't think Pep Guardiola's legacy will be tarnished if he doesn't win the Premier League or FA Cup." 🤝

“We’re talking a lot about his legacy today and I don’t think his legacy will be tarnished if they don’t win the Premier League or the FA Cup at the end of this season,” the former defender told Hayters TV.
“I think his legacy is far greater than Man City to be honest. I think his legacy that he’s left and his impact that he’s had on English football is huge throughout the football pyramid.
“Pep’s influences on coaches and the football in general is far greater than we’ve realised. And yes he’s been outstanding for Man City, but I think he can take a lot of pride in what he’s done for the game.”
Man City have already improved on last season
Guardiola has endured two campaigns at City without lifting a trophy. The first was his opening season at the club, while the second was last year.
Already this season, the Sky Blues have won the Carabao Cup, so he is already better off than at this point last time out.
Of course, it would be disappointing to lose the FA Cup final for a third consecutive year, and losing the Premier League title race will be a tough pill to swallow.
However, this does not change the fact that Guardiola would have averaged 1.9 trophies per season since arriving at Man City.
The greatest since Sir Alex Ferguson
Guardiola is second only to the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson when it comes to trophies won. Then again, give him another 16 years and maybe he would surpass the Scotsman’s record.
To have won so much in the space of a single decade is remarkable, and it is worth noting that the manager has triumphed in the biggest competitions.
He has six Premier League titles to his name, and a Champions League trophy. The likes of Jose Mourinho and Arsene Wenger never won Europe’s most prestigious award during their time in England.
So whatever happens on Saturday or during the rest of the month, this will not dictate how Guardiola is viewed in the years to come.
