Manchester City got the better of Crystal Palace at the Etihad Stadium, and even managed to surprise Oliver Glasner.

No one really knew quite what to expect when Pep Guardiola named his starting lineup on Wednesday evening.

Erling Haaland and Jeremy Doku were left on the bench, while the likes of Savinho and Omar Marmoush were handed a rare opportunity.

In the end, this decision worked out nicely, as Man City blew Crystal Palace away with three well taken goals.

Oliver Glasner describes Man City’s unpredictability

Crystal Palace have a Conference League final later this month which is the club’s priority. Nevertheless, they still did their best to half City in their tracks.

This was ultimately not enough, and Oliver Glasner has put this down to how ‘unpredictable’ the Citizens can be.

He told Sky Sports: “We tried, so everybody tried, but it’s not too easy against a team like City, against players like City who, just see the first goal, it’s just unpredictable.”

On Antoine Semenyo’s goal, Glasner added: “Phil Foden passes with the backheel into space and then we were a little bit late here and then we were surprised and then the clinical finish.”

City need to maintain their element of surprise

Man City have dropped points in the Premier League season because they have been easy to read, with slow, sideways passing.

The draw against West Ham in March is a fine example. However, the attacking line have upped their game.

No defence in the world could have prepared themselves for Foden’s backheeled assist, and that is the kind of innovation the Sky Blues need on a regular basis.

Rayan Cherki and Jeremy Doku have both been coming up with moments of brilliance recently. Having more players adding their genius to the mix could be the key to winning more silverware.

Next up for Man City

With Crystal Palace brushed aside, Man City’s attention moves to Saturday, where Chelsea await in the FA Cup final.

This is a game where City have to be creative, because these types of matches are often settled by fine margins.

For two consecutive years now, Guardiola’s team have lost the cup final by a single goal, so being the side to come up with a special moment has to be their goal.

With Doku in tremendous form and Foden coming up with perfectly timed passes, Man City have a strong chance of victory.
